Brain Awareness Week<\/a> is a global campaign to raise public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research, sponsored by both the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year, Neuroscience students at Einstein organize events in the Bronx to raise awareness of BAW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, 2018, we hosted almost 80 students from Pelham Lab High School in our laboratory buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lessons included general brain anatomy, EEG studies in the Sussman lab, homunculus mapping, and microscope demonstrations in our own Cell and Molecular Imaging Core<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGSO students carried out lessons on species we study in the building and on neuroscience basics. Students carried out their own experiments using Backyard Brains<\/a> Muscle Spiker Box and Neuron Spikerbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year we partner with a local brewery to reach the more general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGSO students engage the public with with fun, interactive demos such as mapping the homunculus, color and motion perception with jelly beans, and tricky color contrast puzzles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, NGSO students have also traveled to local Public Schools with hands-on brain demonstrations and learning activities. We have also hosted events on the Einstein campus and at the Gun Hill Brewery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
